The Five Wise and the Five Foolish Virgins

It is often preached that the virgins are the baptized.  But baptism is not enough, the logic goes.  You must also have faith, which is the oil.  Or, as many of the Fathers preach, the oil is good works (notably, Augustine).

But what if the virgins are all mankind?  The baptized and the unbaptized.  The wise virgins are those who are expecting the Bridegroom, which is the oil.  The foolish virgins are not expecting the Bridegroom.  But, the question comes, whence their virginity?  For we know that not everyone is chaste and pure, undefiled and holy.  But that is not so.  For the Son of Man has taken away the sin of the world.  He has atoned for all sin.  Creation is once again pure and holy.  We, the sons and daughters of Eve, are once again virgins: undefiled and pure.

The obvious objection is that only the baptized have been washed in the blood of the Lamb.  Yes, that’s true.  But the parable of the Ten Virgins is followed by the Sheep and the Goats and is depicting Judgment Day when all the nations will stand before the Son of Man.  It is not for Christians only but for all people of every tribe and nation.  And in the eyes of God the Son has cleansed creation (universal atonement).  But not everyone who has been redeemed is waiting for the Bridegroom. They are fools.
